K-Beauty Routine for Combination Skin

Combination skin does not need two full routines. Use one gentle base across the whole face, then adjust only the two steps that actually differ: seal lighter through the oily T-zone and richer on dry cheeks, and apply any exfoliant only where congestion is. Most people over-correct by using oil-control products everywhere, which dries out the cheeks, or rich creams everywhere, which congests the T-zone. The base routine is identical to every other skin type. Only the last layer changes location.

How to know this is you

  • Oily T-zone with normal or dry cheeks.
  • Congestion around the nose while the cheeks flake.
  • The same product feels right on one area and wrong on another.
  • The balance shifts with the season.

Change these two things

  1. Multi-moisturize: light texture on the T-zone, richer on the cheeks. Same routine, two amounts.
  2. Exfoliate only where the congestion is, not across the whole face.

The routine

1 · CleanseGentle low-foam cleanserOil or balm first if needed, then gentle cleanser
2 · HydrateWatery essence everywhere, on damp skinSame
3 · TreatOptionalBHA on the T-zone only, two nights a week
4 · SealLight gel on the T-zone, richer cream on cheeksSame, slightly richer overall
5 · ProtectSunscreen across the whole face—
Watch out

Treating the whole face for the oiliest part of it is the classic combination-skin mistake. It dries out the cheeks, and dry cheeks make the T-zone look oilier by contrast.

Keep going

The seasons will move this balance. Change the seal step, not the whole routine, when they do.

Questions

Should I use two different moisturizers?

You can, and many people find it simplest to use one light moisturizer everywhere and add a richer layer on the dry areas only.

Can I exfoliate only part of my face?

Yes, and for combination skin that is usually the better approach. Apply the exfoliant where congestion is rather than across areas that are already dry.

My skin changes with the season. Is that normal?

Very. Combination skin often runs oilier in humid months and drier in heated ones. Adjust the seal step and leave the rest of the routine alone.
