Glass skin is not a filter. It is a practice.
Five principles decide almost every skincare question you will ever ask. Learn them once and you stop buying by trend — you buy for the step you are missing.
Korean skincare arrived in America as a ten-step ritual and a shelf of bottles. That is a marketing format, not a method. What actually works is smaller and duller than the internet version: get the water right, protect the barrier, be gentle, layer in order, and keep going long enough to judge it.
Everything below is the whole system. The book applies it week by week to your skin type, your city, and your budget — but the principles are free, and they are here.
Hydration first
Water before anything clever. Most "dull skin" is thirsty skin.
Before you buy an active, fix the water. Skin that is short on water looks flat, feels tight, and reacts to everything you put on it. A humectant layer under a moisturizer does more for the look of your skin in two weeks than a new serum does in two months.
Barrier protection
A calm barrier is the product. Everything else is an accessory.
The barrier is the thin outer layer that keeps water in and irritants out. When it is working, skin tolerates actives, holds moisture, and stays even. When it is not, every product stings. Protecting it is not a step you add — it is the point of the routine.
Gentle over aggressive
Irritation is not progress. It is a delay.
Stripping cleansers, daily strong acids, and stacked actives feel productive and set you back. The gentler route is slower per week and faster per season, because you never lose three weeks repairing what you damaged.
Layer thin to thick
Watery first, richest last. Order beats quantity.
Apply in order of consistency: watery essence, then serum, then emulsion or cream, then sunscreen in the morning. Thin layers absorb; thick layers seal. Getting the order right is free, and it is why the same five products can work or pill.
Consistency over intensity
Results at week 8 to 12. Not overnight, and not from one bottle.
Skin turns over on its own schedule. A modest routine done every night beats an ambitious one done twice a week. Judge a routine at eight to twelve weeks, and change one thing at a time so you know what worked.
A routine is an order, not a quantity.
| Step | Morning | Evening |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Cleanse | Water or a gentle low-foam cleanser | Oil or balm first if you wore sunscreen or makeup, then gentle cleanser |
| 2 · Hydrate | Watery essence or toner on damp skin | Same |
| 3 · Treat | Optional: antioxidant serum | Optional: one active, a few nights a week |
| 4 · Seal | Light moisturizer | Richer moisturizer if your climate is dry |
| 5 · Protect | Sunscreen. Every day. | — |
Five steps is the ceiling, not the target. Most people get further with four done nightly than six done when they remember.
Adding two actives in the same week is the most common way a routine fails. Add one thing, wait two weeks, then decide.
Week 4 is when most people quit and week 8 is when the change shows. If nothing stings and nothing breaks out, you are on schedule.
